I originally discovered Biome Protect by Adapt Naturals via an ad on Instagram, and I felt compelled to give it a try because I was intrigued by the product claims and unique blend of ingredients.
For context, I’ve been navigating Oral Allergy Syndrome since 2009, following the onset of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and subsequent underlying digestive system imbalances. While my IBS is now in remission, I’m always seeking and studying new ways to further support my immune system and address the lingering food allergies more holistically. Also, as a gut health dietitian-nutritionist in private practice, I generally try to test out supplement products before recommending them to my 1-1 clients!

My findings and key takeaways (TL;DR)
General takeaways
- The ingredients in Adapt Naturals products are third-party tested and shown to be effective for supporting gut health, leaky gut, dysbiosis, small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO), and immune resilience from multiple angles.
- The Biome Protect product ingredients are low FODMAP and SIBO-friendly.
- I like the convenience and shelf stability of the product.
- It’s a little pricey, so may not be accessible for people on a tighter budget.

What is Biome Protect?
Biome Protect is a 4-in-1 proprietary blend by Adapt Naturals (a supplement brand by Chris Kresser MS, LAc, a globally-recognized expert, clinician, and educator in the field of functional medicine). This product is uniquely formulated with a synergistic blend of prebiotics, probiotics, postbiotics, and targeted macrophages to support gut health and immunity holistically.
This proprietary blend in Biome Protect has been designed to feed beneficial gut microbes (like Akkermansia) with plant-derived prebiotic polyphenol extracts, while simultaneously supporting a healthy gut barrier, repleting beneficial bacteria (with spore-forming probiotic strain Bacillus coagulans), and targeting and inhibiting the growth of dysbiotic, unhealthy gut microbes via phage therapy. (1, 2)

The ingredients
Bacillus coagulans (as LactoSpore®)
Biome Protect contains 2 billion Colony Forming Units (CFUs) of Bacillus coagulans, a spore-forming, soil-based probiotic strain that is more heat-resistant and shelf-stable, surviving the harsh acidity of stomach acid. (3)
This particular strain has shown to be effective and therapeutic in reducing inflammation and unwanted gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms in cases of IBS and IBD. (2)
Another advantage of Bacillus coagulans is that I’ve found in my clinical nutrition practice that it’s generally well-tolerated by many people with SIBO, compared to many other probiotic strains.
FortiPhage™
Biome Protect stands out from other prebiotic and probiotic supplements on the market because it also contains 15 milligrams (mg) of FortiPhage™, a bacteriophage-derived ingredient designed to target specific harmful dysbiotic bacteria in the gut, while preserving healthy gut microbes. While no studies have been done specifically on FortiPhage, phage therapy is shown to be an effective and better-for-you alternative to antibiotics in that this alternative is not broad spectrum and thus healthier for your gut microbiome (the ecosystem of microbes living mostly in your colon). (4, 5)
Tributyrin (as CoreBiome®)
Butyrate is a post-biotic, which means it’s a byproduct of the fermentation of prebiotics by probiotic microbes in your gut. It’s what makes many probiotic microbes beneficial. Clinically, butyrate is the primary fuel source for our colon cells which is important for a healthy gut barrier. (6)
This product contains 300 mg of tributyrin, a form of butyrate which has been extensively studied and shown to reduce gut inflammation and reach the colon still intact. (7, 8)

Prebiotic polyphenols
Polyphenols are a type of antioxidants shown to have prebiotic properties, feeding beneficial probiotic microbes in your gut. Biome Protect contains 200 mg of extracts from cranberry, pomegranate, grape, and blueberry. These extracts have been shown to feed healthy bacteria in your colon, while also supporting brain health and heart health. (9, 10, 11, 12)
These polyphenol ingredients are also low in FODMAPs and histamines, so the product would likely be well-tolerated by most people with IBS and/or SIBO.
Product claims
The following claims are included on the Biome Protect sales page and packaging:
- “Enhances microbiome health”
- “Feel normal digestion again”
- “Trust your immune system to protect you”
- “Think clearly and feel like yourself”
- “Let your good bacteria thrive”
- “No More Bloating. No More Guessing. Our 4-in-1 blend supports gut barrier function, reducing bloating, gas, and digestive discomfort.”
These claims are based on the research-backed ingredients, but I made sure to test it out for myself.
How to take it: instructions and best practices
Storage
I store my capsules in the fridge when I’m home.
However, the product’s probiotic strain Bacillus coagulans is soil-based and heat-resistant, which means it’s shelf stable, so I’ve occasionally brought the capsules with me to restaurants and taken with food when going out to eat.
Label dose
I took this product according to the label dose: 2 capsules per day, with food for optimal bioavailability and absorption.

Perks and potential research-backed benefits
From a research perspective, we have reasonable evidence to conclude that this product is safe and potentially effective for many people with digestive disorders. Here are some potential perks and benefits based on the ingredients which have been well researched (13):

However, no supplement product is perfect for everyone– there are some limitations and possible contraindications to consider.
Cons, limitations, side effects, and contraindications
While we have lots of evidence to support the safety and clinical efficacy of the ingredients in Biome Protect, the product itself and the specific proprietary ingredients used in this product have not been studied.
Side effects
I strongly recommend taking Biome Protect with food. I’ve taken it a few times on an empty stomach (with a polyphenol-rich juice or green tea) and found that it made me very nauseous!
If you have a histamine intolerance, and you react to most supplements, you may be more likely to react to this product and similar products. Tread lightly and consult with your healthcare team.
Contraindications
This product has not been studied in cases of pregnancy, breastfeeding or certain other medical conditions. I also would not recommend starting this product while you’re actively experiencing a Crohn’s or colitis flare.
Therapeutic dosing considerations
While it’s always best to start low and slow, I’ve noticed that a more therapeutic dose of this product may be more helpful and effective for most people during the early stages of recovering from a digestive disorder.
A more therapeutic dose of Biome Protect may be 2 capsules twice to three times daily, with food.
- If you’re taking the label dose of this product and you don’t notice a difference, this is worth bringing up with your healthcare team.
- Practitioners, please don’t take my word for it since every case is different… use your best discretion and clinical judgment!
My first-hand experience
I’ve found that taking a minimum of the label dose of this product has been helpful in improving my oral tolerance to certain foods, from an IBS/food intolerance perspective (I’m eating and tolerating more beans these days!), and also from an Oral Allergy Syndrome standpoint (I’m eating and tolerating several previously reactive foods without any histamine reaction!).
I’ve also noticed that my skin is clearer and regularity is generally better while I’m taking Biome Protect– when I run out, it’s a good reminder of my previous baseline and I’ve decided to become a recurring monthly customer.
Quality assessment
I love that Biome Protect and other Adapt Naturals products are clinician-formulated and third-party tested. (I generally try to only recommend products that are third-party tested.)
Convenience and ease of use
I personally find that the capsules are easy and convenient to use, and I love that the product is shelf-stable so it’s easy to pack when I’m dining out or traveling. I brought the capsules on a recent trip to the east coast and found it was a success- I was able to eat and drink my way across the state of Massachusetts for an entire week, without hardly any IBS symptom flares (aside from a little bloat and gas one of the evenings). Win! (Being in remission from IBS doesn’t mean you life symptom-free for the rest of your life, FYI! It means flares are more rare, symptoms are less severe, and your body bounces back fast after a flare as long as you’re well equipped with the right tools.)
The product is not yet available on Fullscript, but this would make ordering more convenient for people who like to order different supplements all in one place. As a Fullscript customer and affiliate, I hope to see Biome Protect and other Adapt Naturals supplement products on Fullscript in the near future.

Final expert verdict
As a gut health clinician and a happy customer, I believe Biome Protect is legit! The ingredients are research-backed and third-party tested for safety and efficacy, the product is generally SIBO-friendly, and my gut, immune system, and skin have improved since starting the product. Clinically, I also find that the phage therapy component in combination with the synergy of the prebiotics, probiotics and postbiotics all-in-one give this product a competitive edge over similar alternatives.
I like that multiple ingredients are combined into one product, which, while more costly than another probiotic supplement up-front, can be financially more savvy than purchasing separate variations of each supplement. I also enjoy the convenience and streamlined customer service experience.
Still, I believe Biome Protect would most likely not be enough as a stand-alone intervention for most people navigating gut disorders. Try Biome Protect as a complementary addition to a holistic gut repair protocol. Use it alongside- not in place of- therapeutic dietary interventions, enzyme replacement, herbs, lifestyle modification, and medical care as needed.

Jenna,
I have been struggling for years like most of my life, 68 now. Was diagnosed SIBO 7 years back and did the tx, it reaccurs annually, or at least it feels like it. I purchased the food marble device 3 years ago and I monitor my hydrogen and methane levels. I am always high on the methane, and dont even have to measure my level, because I can feel it. What do you think of the device? And would this product help my methane prone gut issue? Thanks so much for all you do to help us, it is so appreciated!
I am definitely more interested in good health so I would very much appreciate your protocol. Thank you for all the good information and I look forward to hearing from you. Especially leaky gut.
